This course is aimed at all healthcare professionals working in Critical Care areas, Emergency Departments and in wards. All staff- nurses, doctors, allied professionals and support workers- have a role to play in ensuring the delivery of care according to international guidelines. Care is best delivered as a team. This demands that:

- All staff are aware of the condition

- Systems are in place to ensure recognition of septic patients

- There is a team desire to deliver the best care

- Clear lines of communication exist

- A process or care pathway is used to ensure that elements of care are delivered in the right order and with no gaps

- Data is collected and performance monitored

Introduction

Who can make this difference?

In recent years, healthcare professionals have come to accept that the recognition, diagnosis and immediate management of sepsis require improvement. Sepsis is a spectrum of disease. In its least severe form, 1 in 10 sufferers may die. Severe sepsis claims around 1 in 3 patients' lives, and in septic shock the chances of survival are only 1 in 2. Not all, but some of these deaths may be prevented by early recognition and immediate intervention using therapies that are widely available.

You can make this difference!

Survive Sepsis offers training using a combination of classroom-based and self-directed learning. The latter is available either as a manual or an online package with self-assessment.

Survive Sepsis will help you to appreciate the importance of sepsis, spot the septic patient, contribute to the delivery of international care bundles and know when to refer to Critical Care.
