In 2002, an international body, the Surviving Sepsis Campaign, formed as a collaboration between experts and professional organisations across Europe and the Americas. In what became known as the Barcelona Declaration, the Campaign stated an aim to reduce mortality from sepsis by 25%.

In 2004 (updated in 2008), the Campaign produced international guidelines for care. These have been distilled into two 'Care Bundles'. The first of these, the Resuscitation Bundle, is of greatest relevance to most healthcare workers.
The Resuscitation Bundle should be completed within 6 hours of the onset of sepsis. To achieve this demands effective teamworking. The Bundle incorporates elements of care which most healthcare professionals are familiar with- such as fluid challenges and antibiotics- and elements which require specialist skills, such as central venous pressure monitoring. We have evolved the non-specialist tasks into the 'Sepsis Six', designed to facilitate immediate delivery of these tasks while the Critical Care or Emergency team is mobilised to complete the more invasive tasks.
The Campaign has recently published data from over 15,000 patients across 30 countries. They show that sepsis care can improve- and that by 2 years after implementation in contributing hospitals, mortality had fallen by nearly 20%.
